1

Filing a I-129F Petition

This process is the start of it all. Your American fiancé will file a petition with USCIS called I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiancé(e). This is the beginning of it all, but also the part that takes the most time. Right now, the approval of this petition alone is taking about 12-14 months.

There are a few requirements for this petition: the American fiancé must be an US citizen, you must have met in person in the 2 years before filing, both must be free to marry and you must intend to marry within 90 days of entering US with a K1 visa. Some petitions aren't approved right away, sometimes USCIS may need more evidence and may issue a Request for Evidence (RFE).
Everything in this process is paper-based, but you can check your petition status on the USCIS website.

2

Approval of Petition

If you met all the requirements of the petition, and responded to any request for evidences fully and in time, then your petition most likely will be approved and you will be cleared for the next steps.

It's a happy day when you finally see it was approved after so long – the longest wait is now over!
You'll received a paper notice letting you know your petition as approved and it's being sent to the National Visa Center in New Hampshire. This paper notice is usually called NOA2. Keep this in hands!
